3 Practices to Refresh Your Energy Fields

Love the moment and the energy of that moment will spread beyond all boundaries."

– Corita Kent

Living consciously is a sensual endeavor.

We receive information through the five senses of sight, touch, taste, smell and hearing. These sense memories that we gather throughout our lives inform our attitudes, emotions and actions. Beyond our core senses, we have other, more sensitive, ways of engaging the world around us.

All living beings generate electromagnetic fields (or biofields) that have the ability to receive information and deliver instructions. Movement of cells and neural signals within the physical body create energy fields that reach beyond the boundary of our skin. While subtle in comparison to the magnetic field of the earth, our radiant human energy field allows for lightning fast communication.

Our energy fields are a repository of our life experiences, an archive of personal and inherited memories, trauma and injuries. The regulatory systems within our bodies (stimulus and response) are affected by information received from our energy fields. The energy fields of other living beings influence us too; in fact, our energy fields are a symphony of reciprocal movements.

For example, the energy field created by your heart expresses distinct emotional states through patterns of heart rate variability. If you are anxious, you transmit your emotional state to others via your energy field without verbal communication. Your anxiousness in turn affects the heart rate variability of others.

Revitalize Your Energy Field

Blockages in the flow within the energy fields compromise our physical health and well-being. Clearing and restoring the essential flow of your energy fields is vital to the maintenance of your mental and physical health.

While there are many ways to rejuvenate your energies, I have found 3 simple practices that re-energize me in just a few minutes. It is important to use all of your core senses in these practices. It is also imperative to employ your energy fields.

These practices are:

Movement

Establish a movement practice, even if it is only for 10 minutes in the day.

This will awaken your physical and energetic bodies and allow them to dance. I employ movements that I have learned in Tai Chi and Qigong classes. However, the movement you choose can be as simple as shaking all parts of your body. When I take a break, I don’t sit and rest, I move.

Awareness

Enhance your 5 core senses – sight, touch, taste, smell and hearing – by filling your awareness with sensual stimulation.

Visual artists have superior visualization skills because they are intensely aware of colors, shapes and distances in their visual fields. Musicians have a keen sense of hearing and a tactile sense of touch. Great cooks develop a complex sense of taste, smell and a visual sense of presentation.

Expand your senses by focusing your awareness on one of your core senses each day. Don’t forget to incorporate your energy fields in the practice

Gratitude

As a practice, gratitude will open your heart field and calm your nervous system. The key to a successful gratitude practice is to start small. You might try these simple steps:

  • Focus on your heart and allow your heart to feel grateful for a specific person, place or thing in your life.

  • When you are ready, allow your heart to see the object of your gratitude. Then hear the object of your gratitude.

  • When you are ready, try to smell the object of your gratitude. Then touch the object of your gratitude.

  • Now taste the object of your gratitude.

With the energy of your heart field, radiate your gratitude beyond your physical body into your energetic body. In this way, you may expand your gratitude practice and share it with others.
