Ritual: Solstice Fire Ceremony

Fire is a powerful transformer. It transmutes heavy energy into light. It delivers our prayers to the heavens and cleanses our hearts.

Fire ceremonies can be large community events or small, private rituals of renewal. Most often fire ceremonies are held on a full or new moon when the veils between the worlds are thin.

Celebrating the sun’s solstice or equinox with a transformative fire is also a powerful a way to release that which no longer serves our health and wellbeing.

  • Gather Materials

Make a choice of the type of fire you wish to have - fire pit, metal bowl or candle – and collect the materials needed for a safe fire. Depending on the size of the fire, choose burnable objects to burn – sticks, toothpicks, herbs or papers.

  • Set an Intention

Spend time thinking of those things you wish to release in ceremony – habits, attitudes, relationship, etc. You may write, draw or simply blow what you are releasing into a burnable object.

  • Invocation

Before lighting the fire, call on invisible forces beyond yourself that will hold the sacred space for your ceremony. This could be elements in nature, animals, gods, goddesses, angels or fairies. Ask each to use their power to make this fire transformative.

  • Transformation

Light the fire and make offerings to build its strength, intensity and sweetness. Once the fire has become friendly (your intuition will tell you when), surrender your burnable objects to the fire thanking the fire for receiving that which you are letting go.

  • Closure

Thank the forces you invited to your fire for holding you in ceremony. Then release them. Recite a poem or sing a song of thanksgiving. Wait until the fire burns down to ashes. Or, extinguish the flame of a candle asking the magic of the fire to continue in dream time.

  • Celebration

Enjoy the foods of the season as a special way to celebrate yourself, your friends and family.
