Falling into Surrender and Trust

“To be trusted is a greater compliment than being loved.”
– George McDonald
On September 21, the fall equinox, I spent time in the company of friends in ceremony. Good friends and family are important in my life. We relish the time we get to spend together laughing, eating and telling stories.
These are the folks I rely on to help me when I am sick and care for me when I am dying. My husband and I do not have children to lean on in times of difficulty. We must plan, figure out who is best suited for the various jobs, and ask for help.
Preparing for death as a rite of passage requires trust.
I must trust myself to prepare documents and make good decisions. And then, I must trust myself to build an end-of-life community that can support me as I approach the threshold of life and death.I am entrusting my chosen Medical Proxy with the power to navigate medical tests and treatment options when I cannot make decisions for myself.
I am trusting that my designated Power of Attorney will manage my financial and legal affairs when I am vulnerable. And finally, I am trusting that the Executor of my Last Will & Testament will steer my estate through probate court, tax reports and finally distribute my property to my designated beneficiaries.
It is hard for me to surrender control and trust.
Fall is the best time of the year for me to practice letting go. My teachers are the deciduous trees that burst into vibrant colors before they release their leaves to the earth. I choose this time of year to practice the art of surrender to trust.
This month’s workbook focuses on who is the best person to serve as your Power of Attorney. It also helps you choose the best person to assume the responsibilities of Executor of your estate.
